first_imgJonny Bairstow’s unbeaten 107 saved England on the first day of the third Test against Sri Lanka on Thursday, taking the hosts to 279-6 at stumps after they were struggling on 84-4 on a good batting pitch at Lord’s.Bairstow made his third career century – all of them have come this year – to give England relief after captain Alastair Cook opted to bat first.Bairstow survived a dropped catch and a close lbw decision. He shared half-century stands with Cook (85) and Chris Woakes (23 not out).Having already lost the series, Sri Lanka had early success when opener Alex Hales threw away his wicket, and Nick Compton, Joe Root and James Vince all went cheaply.Suranga Lakmal, Nuwan Pradeep and Rangana Herath took two wickets each.last_img
