Linda Balgord Joins The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway

first_imgFondest greetings to a Great White Way vet! Linda Balgord, who plays Madame Giry in the North American tour of The Phantom of the Opera, is returning to Broadway. She will begin performances as Giry in the New York production on December 15, along with the previously announced Julia Udine as Christine. Balgord succeeds Ellen Harvey, who will give her final performance on December 13. Norm Lewis has also once again extended his stay as the musical’s title character and will now play through February 7, 2015. Balgord’s Broadway credits include Cats, The Pirate Queen, Gypsy, La Cage aux Folles and Passion. She starred as Norma Desmond in the first national tour of Sunset Boulevard and as Rose Vibert in the U.S. and Canadian tour of Aspects of Love. The current cast of the longest-running show on the Great White Way also includes Mary Michael Patterson as Christine, Jeremy Hays as Raoul, Laird Mackintosh as Monsieur André, Tim Jerome as Monsieur Firmin, Michele McConnell as Carlotta, Christian Šebek as Piangi, Kara Klein as Meg Giry and Kaley Ann Voorhees as the Christine alternate. first_imgSixteen teams vie for top honours in Bartica this weekendTHE final Zone competition in the 2017 Guinness Greatest of the Streets football will be played off in Bartica this weekend, with 16 teams battling for top honours and a chance to compete in the grand finals.The tournament will kick off tomorrow with six matches at the Bartica Community Centre tarmac starting at 19:00hrs.The opening fixture will bring together Almanac Kings against Time Square, to be followed by Campbellville versus Street Kings at 19:30hrs.River View will square off against Lotto Arcade at 20:00hrs, followed by Plantain Slice opposing Young Guns.Police will face Beacon One Love at 21:00hrs while the final game of the evening will feature All Stars against Beacon Die Hard at 21:30hrs.Two more preliminary matches will be played on Saturday, featuring Potaro Strikers against Lazio at 19:00hrs then Impact versus Ballers before the quarter-final matches.The semi-finals and final will be played on Sunday along with the third-place playoff and several exhibition matches.The winners will advance to represent the mining community in the grand finals billed for next month featuring the top zone teams from Georgetown, East Coast Demerara, Linden, Berbice West Demerara/East Bank Demerara.Guinness Brand Manager Lee Baptiste said that fans in Bartica can expect an exciting weekend of football.“We expect an exciting tournament and the residents of the community will prove that they are “Made of More” as they support the teams in their quest for glory,” he added.last_img read more

Badiru, Dantata Are Future of Nigeria Polo, Says LPC President

first_imgPresident of the Lagos Polo Club, Ade Laoye has described the performances of Timi Badiru and Selim Dantata at the just-concluded Lagos International Polo Tournament as hugely-impressive submitting that both teenagers are future of the game in the country.Badiru, 14, and Selim, 11, made their debuts at the prestigious tournament reputed to be the highest-rated in West Africa and their total ratings at the 11-day double-phase polo extravaganza are above average.While Badiru featured for Lagos RCF, Selim played for Kano BUA and the club helmsman expressed delight at their performances. “That teenagers like Timi and Selim are already performing well at this stage, points to the fact that the future of the game in Lagos Polo Club is bright. They are the future of the game in Nigeria,” Laoye stated during the presentation of the Churchward Plate which he captained Lagos Ribadu while Badiru captained the Lagos Awolowo team.Meanwhile, Natalie Allan has said that she hopes to use the experience she got at this year’s tournament to guide her to win laurels at the club’s tournaments scheduled for later in the year.For the second year running, the minus-one handicap player rolled with the boys and played a huge part in her team winning their two preliminary round matches, although it was not enough as they missed out of the final on goals difference.“I’m excited to play again at this wonderful tournament. The experience is piling up and I know very soon I should be able to cap my outings with titles.
