Wildcats can’t claw their way back

first_imgEVANSTON, Ill. – When Ben Brust missed two deep three-point attempts to open the Wisconsin men’s basketball team’s (19-8, 10-4 Big Ten) road bout with Northwestern (13-14, 4-10 Big Ten) Wednesday night, the game had all the early signs of an anxiety-ridden, Big Ten dogfight. But the dry spell ended in timely fashion and quickly the Badgers found themselves the owners of a 9-0 lead less than five minutes into the game on their way to a 69-41 drubbing of the Wildcats at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Despite playing on the comforts of its own purple-lined floor, Northwestern lost its touch early and found itself in a hole that, by the time it discovered its own offense, it never had time to climb from.In other words, things had gone just as Bo Ryan and Co. planned.“I said in the huddle, we got to step on their throats early, not let them hang around because if we do its going to be a dogfight,” senior forward Mike Bruesewitz said. “Their coach does a great job here, runs a very, very good system, they control the pace, they make sure they’re going to get the shots they want.”Strong perimeter defense from Wisconsin and an absolutely brutal half offensively for Northwestern left the Badgers with a commanding 16-point lead at the halftime break. The Wildcats limped to only 12 points in the opening 20 minutes – the lowest total for a UW opponent this season – and nine of those points came on three-pointers. Often kicking the ball around the perimeter before tossing up an unfavorable look as the shot clock climbed closer to zero, the home squad finished an ugly 4-of-20 from the field in the first half.Yet Northwestern emerged from the locker room with its offense revived. After two quick baskets from Dave Sobolewski and Reggie Hearn, NU took advantage of a turnover on the opposite end from Brust when Tre Demps hit a three-pointer from the left corner. But UW quickly cut the cord on the offensive electricity with five unanswered points to return its lead to a comfortable 17-point margin.“We knew they were going to flat-hedge, they were coming off screens and things,” Hearn, a senior guard, said. “We knew we would have some fairly open mid-range jumpers and aside from Dave [Sobolewski] hitting a few early in the second half, I don’t think anybody really hit those.”Hearn proved one of the only sparks for Northwestern in the second half, leading his team with 13 points. But even the Wildcats’ most powerful offensive sparkplug shot just 28.6 percent from the floor, a mark representative of his team’s offensive struggles Wednesday night. As the three-point balls failed to fall, it was the ability to feed the ball to the big men inside and collect easy scores right around the basket on misses that allowed UW to jump in the driver’s seat early on.Wisconsin shot just 29.4 percent from three-point territory and instead of forcing the issue, it used its size advantage inside to earn high-percentage looks. Fifth-year senior center-forward Jared Berggren – who did not convert on his one three-point attempt of the night – led the effort with a highly efficient 5-of-9, 12-point performance from the floor.“We fed Berggren, he got a couple easy ones and Ryan [Evans] got some, I got one, Sam [Dekker] got a couple,” Bruesewitz said. “So when shots aren’t falling we got to hit the glass and make sure we feed the big guys down low. We did a good job of that.”The Badgers did not exactly burn the nets down early, and Brust missed his first four looks from three-point land – many of them looks the sharpshooter usually buries with regularity.Brust then regained his rhythm from the perimeter, sinking all three of his shot attempts in the second half, two of them from his preferred spot outside the three-point arc. His renewed energy in the second half left him tied with Berggren for the team-high with 12 points and he also pulled down eight rebounds.“He’s got a nose for the ball,” UW head coach Bo Ryan said. “That’s something that has made him such a powerful force for us because he can shoot, for the most part … and the fact that he can rebound the way he can, that really helps.”Though never returning to its painfully unproductive first half pace, the Wildcats’ offense quickly slowed and by the midway point of the second half Wisconsin had a 21-point lead.Playing without its top scoring threat in Drew Crawford and with two other likely starters unavailable, the Wildcats looked helpless for stretches Wednesday night and simply lacked the offensive firepower or experience to mount a comeback.NU did not lead for a single minute of play on its home court, never creeping closer than 12 points in the second half.“Northwestern is a team that, they are capable of giving you problems, but at the same time we feel like this is a game we had to win if we want to be there at the end of the conference race,” Berggren said. “This is one where you just got to take care of business, especially with the injuries and some of the unfortunate things they’ve had happen to them.”last_img read more

Province wide registration system to start for off road vehicles

first_imgTo provide plenty of notice and allow for a smooth transition, the new registration system is currently voluntary for operation on Crown land, but will become mandatory on June 1, 2015.  The combined cost of the number plate and registration fee is $48.Steve Thomson, Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations says “Off-road vehicle registration will help combat vehicle theft as well as promote safe and environmentally responsible use of ORVs in B.C.’s backcountry. Starting voluntary registration now provides ORV owners plenty of opportunity to adjust to the new requirements.”Effective Nov. 17, off-road vehicle owners can obtain a one-time registration for off-road vehicles that is integrated within the pre-existing structure of the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia’s (ICBC) motor vehicle registry. This will reduce implementation costs and allows off road vehicle owners to register at any of the 900-plus ICBC insurance brokers in the province.- Advertisement -These changes, made possible by the passage of the Off-Road Vehicle Act on March 24, 2014, support the Province’s Off Road Vehicle Management Framework. The framework will help British Columbians get out and enjoy the beauty of the province’s backcountry and ensure off-road vehicles, including snowmobiles, are driven in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. To date, the Off-Road Vehicle Management Framework has been implemented in stages. Future regulations will follow that will flesh out ORV rules of operation, safety standards, penalties and conditions of use for awide range of modern ORVs, including snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles or “quads”, dirt bikes and side-by-sides (e.g., Rhinos and Argos).BACKGROUNDEROff road vehicle registration detailsAdvertisement Why should I register now? There are a number of good reasons to register under the Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) Act now rather than wait for the mandatory date of June 1, 2015:* ORV riders that choose to register now start to benefit from this program earlier.* For example, if your ORV is stolen, a registered vehicle can more easily be tracked back to you as the registered owner.* The ORV number plate is a dual purpose plate — if you register and a get the number plate under the ORV Act, it may also be used for highways crossings if the ORV is also licensed and insured under the Motor Vehicle Act.What information do I need to bring to the broker to register my ORV?Advertisement To demonstrate you are the legal owner of the vehicle, one or more of the following is required:* A New Vehicle Information Statement or a Certificate of Origin if purchased new, but never registered previously.* A Bill of Sale or other document acceptable as a Bill of Sale, such as a Transfer Tax Form (APV9T) signed by seller – Transfer Tax forms are widely available from any Autoplan broker.* A completed B. C. Consumer Taxation Branch Gift of Vehicle Form (FIN 319)* For ORVs imported from the U.S., a Title Certificate; Form 1 or B15 Accounting Document.* For ORVs imported into B.C. from another Canadian jurisdiction, the previous registration documents.* In the absence of the above, a sworn statutory declaration (MV1484) will be required with information about how you came into possession of the off road vehicle and your attempts to get the one or more of theother documentation as described above. If you’re uncertain on what documents you need to register your ORV, contact your local ICBC Autoplan broker who can help figure out which document fits your situation best.last_img read more

Villa fans on Twitter react to Hogan talks

first_imgAston Villa fans on Twitter are split over the merits of signing Brentford striker Scott Hogan. The Bees have entered talks with their Championship rivals over a potential sale, with Crystal Palace also making an enquiry.Villa had previously been in for Middlesbrough striker Jordan Rhodes, and some of their fans are not sure Hogan is an improvement.Would rather #AVFC spend the money on Rhodes instead of Hogan— Marcus Patterson (@beefro1980) January 31, 2017Hogan been prolific for half a season…. Rhodes been prolific for 5 years…. let that sink in for a minute or two #avfc— villaparkb6 (@villaparkb6) January 31, 2017What makes Scott Hogan more appealing than Jordan Rhodes,Rhodes has scored at this level and below and years— Shaun Beasley (@shaunbeasley98) January 31, 2017If we weren’t prepared to pay 9 mil for Rhodes why pay 15 for Scott hogan, madness #avfc— Jamie Hughes (@jamiebarthughes) January 31, 2017Does anyone rate Hogan? Apart from his recent goals he has struggled with clubs and injuries. Price tag seems very high for him. #avfc— Mark Patton (@MarkPatton7) January 31, 2017But others said they preferred former Rochdale man Hogan, given he is on the way up in his career.Signing Scott Hogan would be a good deal. Women’s Month looks at unity in South Africa

first_img30 July 2015Women’s achievements in the workplace were acknowledged by Susan Shabangu at the official launch of Women’s Month t, at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on 30 July.Shabangu, the minister in The Presidency responsible for women, said it was important that women’s achievements – such as being judges, directors or publishers in companies and those in male dominated environments like policing – should not be denied. “Next year, we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Women’s March which took place in 1956. We are now hosting events in the build up to next year’s celebrations.”Challenges women faced today would also be addressed, such as gender-based violence. “From the beginning of November, we will engage women in national dialogues, making sure we understand why we still have these challenges.“We will try to identify the gaps and have to strengthen the arms with communities.”The theme of Women’s Month this year is “Women united in moving South Africa forward”. Women’s Month runs every August, with Women’s Day an annual national public holiday on 9 August. The day marks the Women’s March against apartheid laws, specifically against the law requiring all black women to carry pass books, which took place on 9 August 1956.Women from all parts of the country arrived in Pretoria and marched to the Union Buildings to deliver a petition to the prime minister, JG Strijdom. He was not there to meet the women, who left huge bundles of petitions. Estimates of the number of marchers ranged from 10 000 to 20 000.Shabangu remarked that the women in the 1956 march came together despite their diversity and the apartheid laws. “They united to say ‘we need each other as women in this country. Our fight is the fight of all the women in South Africa.’”The unity of women in diversity continued to be the anchor to take South Africa forward.Guests at the launch included actress Sophie Ndaba and activist Sophie de Bruyn, who had taken part in the 1956 march.“Minister Shabangu says we want to pay tribute to all women who played a significant role in this freedom that we enjoy today,” tweeted @GCISMedia, the government’s media account. “Minister Shabangu says all the Women’s Month events will take the nation down memory lane about the role women played.”There would be weekly events as part of the Womens Month programme, it was reported.Week one would celebrate women in fashion; week two would examine women in the film industry; week three would focus on the trafficking of women and children and the exploitation of women; week four would be concerned with women’s economic empowerment of women.SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

Geocaching Travel Bug “WeeHawk” Predicts Football’s Biggest Game?

Geocacher and Seahawks fan Bogey53 picked up the smallest 12th man and took it along to celebrate the first SuperBowl win for Seattle’s football team. Here is the proof:Geocaching Travel Bug at the MetLife Stadium during the Super Bowl XLVIII.A Geocaching Travel Bug might just be the key to winning it all for a major sports team. Skeptical? Don’t try telling Swanny6416 their fiery little world traveler didn’t help propel the Seattle Seahawks to football’s biggest game. The family of four die-hard Seahawks fans launched Weehawk in August. The Travel Bug’s mission was simple.Swanny6416, or Shawn and Criselda as their non-geocaching friends know them, say, “On August 17, 2013, we sent Weehawk on his journey to Super Bowl XLVIII in New York. He was placed in a cache location in Federal Way (near Seattle) in hopes of eventually finding his way to the big game where he would meet the team. We had high hopes that Weehawk would work his way across the country but figured it would be a long shot, at best, for him to make it through hostile territory since a lot of “enemy” NFL team fans live between us and New York.”Geocachers will move Travel Bugs from geocache to geocache closer to it’s goal.Weehawk traveled as far as Indonesia before returning its mission to make it to the big gameBut as the Seattle Seahawks won football game after football game, their small Travel Bug mascot named Weehawk drifted farther and farther from New York. The geocachers say, “On December 27th, Weehawk was picked up in Hawaii and the following message was sent: ‘Well, I guess the little one had his vacation in Hawaii — quite far from its goal. Luckily, I am in a position to help it along towards its destination, with however quite a big detour…’ Even though the odds of Weehawk returning to New York were seemingly insurmountable, we had every expectation that he would succeed, just like our beloved Seattle Seahawks journey through the playoffs.”Weehawk abroad in a faraway geocache in IndonesiaFate, in the form of motivated geocachers, would intervene. Weehawk was now far, far, and yet another “far” away from New York. The Travel Bug wondered to Indonesia to begin 2014. But the geocachers who launched Weehawk, believe the Travel Bug would be crucial in helping to the Seahawks make it to New York for the big game. The Travel Bug was taken from a geocache in Indonesia by a geocacher. Weehawk landed in a New York geocache just miles from Met Life Stadium, where football’s biggest game will be played this Sunday.Shawn and Criselda say, “He was then taken to New York City on January 19th and dropped off a mere 15.8 miles from Met Life Stadium! This was the same day that the Seahawks beat the San Francisco 49ers for the right to go to the big game!” Coincidence? The Swanny6416’s don’t think so either.New York geocache site. Weehawk lives hereBut it’s not close enough. They say, “Weehawk is waiting for a [Seattle Seahawk’s fan] to pick him up and take him to the game. He is currently at Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx, NY hiding near some granite pillars that were to be used in the construction of Grand Central Station!  We’re hoping by sharing our story with you, you can share our story, and maybe another fan can get him to the game.”So many questions. Will Weekhawk’s appearance at the game ensure a Seattle Seahawks win? Are you going to the game? Will you make this Travel Bug’s dream come true?  Answer them all in comments below.Still want more? Top 10 Semantic Web Products of 2010

first_imgAptureApture is a semantic contextual search service which continues to iterate strongly (it made our top 10 list last year, too). In August, Apture launched Apture Highlights, a plug-in that allows you to dive deep into any topic you discover on almost any page around the web. When we first noticed Apture several years ago, it was a service that required publishers to load up linked pop-up widgets with multimedia of their own choosing. The company removed that barrier to entry with its August release. Everything is now automated and it’s available almost everywhere. Indeed we liked it so much, we started using Apture on ReadWriteWeb (there is no commercial relationship, we just think the product adds to our site’s user experience).Facebook Arguably the biggest Semantic Web news of the year came in April, when Facebook announced a large-scale new platform called the Open Graph. The stated goal of the Open Graph protocol was to enable publishers to “integrate [their] Web pages into the social graph.” Essentially, each web page can now become an ‘object’ in Facebook’s social graph (which is Facebook’s term for how people connect to each other in its network). This means that pages can be referenced and connected across social network user profiles, blog posts, search results, Facebook’s News Feed, and more. The Open Graph is a wide-ranging platform which includes features such as ‘Like’ buttons and publisher plug-ins. It also includes a simple, RDF-based markup. This requires publishers to include at least 4 metadata properties in each object: title, type, image, URL. There are a few additional properties which may be optionally added, such as site_name and description. Data.gov.uk In January, Data.gov.uk launched to make non-personal data held by the U.K. government available for software developers. It arrived six months after the U.S. government launched its Data.gov site, but from the start the U.K. site had more than three times as much data. At launch, Data.gov.uk had nearly 3,000 data sets available for developers to build mashups with. By the end of the year, that had increased to over 4,600.Data.gov.uk was one of the highlights of the year in Linked Data, which is when organizations or governments upload data to the Web in a format enabling it to be re-used and built on. Linked Data is a subset of the wider Semantic Web movement.See also: The State of Linked Data in 2010BBC World Cup Website The biggest sporting event of the year was the soccer World Cup, which was widely covered in the media. The BBC World Cup 2010 website used “dynamic semantic publishing” technology to enhance its daily World Cup reporting. The site featured over 700 webpages and was powered by a semantic publishing framework. It boasted a comprehensive ontology (a map of concepts), that output “automated metadata-driven web pages” created on-the-fly. It was an impressive demonstration of how a large, mainstream website can add meaning and structure. There you have it, ReadWriteWeb’s selection of the top 10 Semantic Web products and implementations of 2010! The fact is that a good portion of our top 10 use technologies that are either not approved by the W3C (the Web’s governing body, led by Sir Tim Berners-Lee), or they’ve been tweaked in some way – for example, Facebook’s use of RDFa. So we’ve chosen to use the term ‘Semantic Web’ in its broader, more inclusive, sense. In a nutshell, these are products that add meaning and context to data. Here then is our list of the top 10 Semantic Web products or implementations of 2010 (in no particular order).Freebase In July Google acquired one of the leading Semantic Web companies, Metaweb. Metaweb runs Freebase, an open, semantically marked up database of information. It looks similar to Wikipedia, but Freebase is all about structured data and what you can do with it.Google already had a relationship with Freebase, pulling in its information to provide intelligent search results within Google News. With the acquisition of Metaweb, Google can now leverage the company’s tools and data even further, especially within basic Web search results.Freebase was one of our top 10 Semantic Web products last year and being acquired by Google validates its potential.GetGlue This year was a turning point for GetGlue, the service where users “check in” to watching TV shows, reading books, listening to music and more. Last November, GetGlue changed its branding and launched a new website. It changed almost overnight from a geeky browser add-on called Blue Organizer to a destination website called GetGlue. Mobile applications followed soon after, enabling its users to interact with GetGlue while watching TV or at an entertainment venue. The changes have been good for GetGlue. It’s experienced strong growth this year, reaching over 600,000 users by the end of September.Disclosure: GetGlue’s founder and CEO, Alex Iskold, used to be a regular contributer to RWW.Flipboard The launch of the iPad in 2010 triggered a new round of innovation in the startup community. Few startups utilized the touchscreen UI to create a unique user experience more than Flipboard, a magazine reading application built specifically for the iPad.It turns out that Flipboard isn’t just a pretty face, it’s also using Semantic technologies. In July, Flipboard acquired semantic technology startup Ellerdale, whose intelligent data-parsing algorithms had previously been used to create a real-time search engine and trends tracker. Ellerdale’s technology was used by Flipboard to design a more personalized real-time experience – determining what social updates are important to you and presenting them in its now familiar magazine-like format.HunchHunch started out as a Q&A service, but in August it re-positioned as a personalization service. It’s a recommendation engine that shows you movies you want to see, books you want to read, vacation destinations you want to go to, and much more. The company is on a mission to “map every person on the Internet to every object on the Internet, be that a product, a service, or a person.”Co-founder Caterina Fake told us in October that Hunch uses a decision tree model, as an alternative to search, to provide more personalized information to users. See also: Facebook Open Graph: The Definitive Guide For Publishers, Users and CompetitorsGoogle Squared The holy grail in web search technology is to be able to ask a simple question, in natural language, and get a simple answer. In May, Google announced that Google Squared was coming to its search results. Google Squared, which launched in 2009, adds additional information to search results. The functionality was added to Google’s traditional search results in two ways. Firstly, simple queries such as Catherine Zeta-Jones’ date of birth elicited useful data within the search results:By clicking “show sources” on the Squared-provided result, a list of sources appears showing you how Google arrived at this answer.Secondly, Google Squared is being used to provide a new feature in Google’s sidebar (another innovation by the search giant in 2010): “Something different”. This feature provides a list of related searches that may be of interest, determined by looking at your current search term. This year Google also reported strong growth in its Rich Snippets feature, which adds extra information to Google search results too – in this case, data like review ratings.Best Buy One of the themes of 2010 was the increasing usage of Semantic Web technologies by large commercial companies like Facebook and Google. Leading U.S. retailer, Best Buy, was another large company to impress in 2010 with its adoption of semantic technologies. Specifically, Best Buy used a Semantic Web markup language called RDFa to add semantics to its webpages.Jay Myers, Lead Web Development Engineer at BestBuy.com, told ReadWriteWeb in an interview earlier this year that the primary goal of using semantic technologies was to increase the visibility of Best Buy’s products and services. With data such as store name, address, store hours and GEO data being marked up using RDFa, search engines are now able to identify each of those data components more easily and put them into context. The use of semantic technology, Myers told us, led to increased traffic and better service to its customers. richard macmanus Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Related Posts center_img Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Every year ReadWriteWeb selects the top 10 products or developments across a range of categories.
